Inside the Majors
A look at news and trends in the Big LeaguesWho Has The Best Baseball Farm System?
In most years, there is usually spirited debate about what team has the best minor league farm system, with the Braves, Rangers and Rays usually among the top of the list. However, there is no debate this year: the top farm system in baseball clearly belongs to the Kansas City Royals.
Thanks to several consecutive losing seasons, the Royals have been able to benefit from many top draft picks, which they have put to good use. Indeed, the Royals have three of the top ten prospects in all of baseball as rated by Baseball America: first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas and outfielder Wil Myers.
The Royals system only got better this past off-season when they traded their ace pitcher Zack Greinke to the Milwaukee Brewers for four players, including their top prospect, pitcher Jake Odorizzi. In total, the Royals have 9 players in the top 100, leading some to question whether they have one of the best farm systems ever.
With the Royals making a quick start out of the gates this season, there is legitimate hope for the first time in a long while in Kansas City. And as these top prospects start to make their impact known as early as this year, the Royals could start to contend very soon.
